Description

Nero as Caesar, Didrachm, AR, Seleucis and Pieria (Antioch), c. AD 50–54; 5.76 g; 21 mm. Laureate head of Nero as Caesar right with legend ΝΕΡΩΝΟΣ ΚΑΙΣΑΡΟΣ ΓΕΡΜΑΝΙΚΟΥ; reverse with draped bust of Agrippina the Younger right and legend ΑΓΡΙΠΠΙΝΗΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΗΣ. Struck at Antioch on the Syrian didrachm standard, employing Greek legends in the genitive to name both portraits. RPC I 4170.

Issued after Nero’s adoption by Claudius in AD 50 and Agrippina’s elevation to Augusta, this type records Nero’s pre-accession status and his mother’s title within the eastern provincial coinage system. The Greek inscriptions and didrachm denomination reflect Antioch’s role supplying local silver on the Syrian standard, showing how Roman dynastic titles were presented for circulation in the eastern provinces immediately before Nero’s accession in AD 54.
