Description
ANTONINUS PIUS, AD 138-161. AR Denarius (18 mm, 3.05 g). Rome, second consulship, AD 139. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P – Laureate head right. Minerva standing left, resting left hand on upright spear and shield at side; right hand lowered. In left field, the legend C O S arranged vertically (denoting the emperor’s second consulship). RIC III 56; BMCRE 111; RSC 121. Light silver-grey surfaces with warm cabinet tone, well-struck portrait; a few peripheral edge splits.
Struck within a year of Antoninus Pius’s accession, this denarius proclaims the stability that Rome hoped would continue the Pax Romana of Hadrian. By pairing his dignified portrait with Minerva—the goddess of strategic wisdom and calm deliberation—Pius visually announced a reign guided by prudence rather than conquest. The conspicuous COS II in the field records his second consulship of AD 139, underscoring the Senate’s swift confirmation of his authority and foreshadowing the long, remarkably uneventful quarter-century that later Romans would remember as a golden age of peace and good governance.
