Description

ANTONINUS PIUS, AD 138-161. AR Denarius (19 mm, 3.01 g, 6 h). Rome, struck AD 157, on the occasion of the emperor’s seventh largesse.  ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XX – Laureate head right.  LIBERALITAS VII COS IIII – Liberalitas standing left, holding counting board (abacus) in extended right hand and long cornucopia in left. RIC III 303; BMCRE 1004; RSC 484. Light silver-grey toning with underlying lustre, minor flan irregularities at edge

“Liberalitas” issues commemorated the emperor’s formal cash distributions (congiaria) to Rome’s citizens. Antoninus Pius made at least seven such donations; the present coin records the seventh (LIBERALITAS VII) in AD 157, a moment when his long, peaceful reign was celebrated for fiscal prudence and public generosity. By pairing his solid, time-worn portrait with the figure counting out gifts from an abacus, Pius reminded recipients that their prosperity flowed directly from the emperor’s judicious stewardship of the treasury, an image that helped cement his posthumous reputation as Rome’s most beneficent princeps.
