Description
Menander I Soter, Drachm, AR, c. 155–130 BC, 2.40 g, 18 mm.
Uncertain mint. Obverse with diademed bust of Menander right; legend BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣΩTHPOΣ MENANΔPOY. Reverse with Athena Alkidemos advancing left, hurling thunderbolt and holding shield decorated with aegis; monogram in left field. Struck on the Attic-weight Indo-Greek drachm module at an uncertain mint. HGC 12, 191. Menander I (Soter) ruled a major Indo-Greek kingdom spanning parts of present-day Afghanistan and northwestern India, and his silver coinage formed a principal instrument of administration and exchange across culturally mixed markets. The Athena Alkidemos type reflects Macedonian royal iconography, while his issues are often bilingual (Greek and Kharosthi), evidencing a policy of engagement with local populations. Menander’s reign, also preserved in the Indian text Milindapañha, marks a high point of Hellenistic influence in South Asia and the integration of Greek monetary practice into the subcontinent.
