Description
Ephesos (Ionia), AR Drachm, c. 202–150 BC, 4.01 g, 17 mm. Obv: Bee with spread wings; Ε–Φ flanking. Rev: Stag standing right beside palm tree; magistrate’s name ΑΠΟΛΛΑΣ. Struck to the Attic drachm standard on a compact flan typical of the series. Ref: Kinns, Attic, 3.2–3.
This civic silver belongs to the long-lived Ephesian “bee and stag” series honoring the cult of Artemis Ephesia, whose attributes the types reference. The appearance of the magistrate’s name reflects local administrative oversight of coinage in the Hellenistic period. The date range spans a transitional era for Ephesos, from Seleucid influence into Attalid control after the Treaty of Apamea in 188 BC, during which the city continued to issue Attic-standard silver under named officials.
