Description
Vespasian, Denarius, AR, reign AD 69–79; Rome, AD 72–73. 3.28 g, 18 mm.
Obverse: IMP CAES VESP AVG P M COS IIII; laureate head of Vespasian right.
Reverse: CONCORDIA AVGVSTI; Concordia seated left, holding patera and cornucopia.
Struck at Rome on a standard denarius flan during Vespasian’s fourth consulship; silver fabric typical of early Flavian issues. References: RIC II, Part 1 (second edition) 357. Issued soon after the civil wars of AD 69, this Concordia type broadcasts the regime’s emphasis on restored political harmony under the new Flavian order. The COS IIII titulature dates the coin to AD 72–73, aligning it with Vespasian’s early consolidation at Rome and the promotion of stability between emperor, Senate, and people.
