Caracalla, 198-217, Denarius

Caracalla, Denarius, AR, AD 198–217, 3.10 g, 19 mm. Rome mint. Obverse legend ANTONINVS AVGVSTVS with laureate head of Caracalla right. Reverse legend VICT AETERN with Victory standing left, holding wreath and palm. Struck at Rome on the standard Severan denarius module. RIC IV Caracalla 47A.

This reverse type broadcasting “eternal victory” reflects Severan military messaging during Caracalla’s reign, a period marked by sustained campaigning on the Danubian and eastern frontiers and administrative measures including the Constitutio Antoniniana in AD 212. Issued at Rome, such denarii served to reinforce dynastic stability and martial success across the empire’s monetary circuits.
