Description

Geta as Caesar, Denarius, AR, AD 198–209; Laodicea ad Mare (Syria), c. AD 202–205; 3.94 g; 18 mm. Bare-headed, draped bust of Geta right; P SEPT GETA CAES PONT. Victory standing left, holding wreath and palm; VICT AETERN. Struck at the Eastern mint of Laodicea ad Mare in the Severan Eastern style. RIC IV Geta 101.

As the younger son of Septimius Severus, Geta was created Caesar in AD 198 and remained junior to his brother Caracalla until 209. This Eastern issue from Laodicea ad Mare carries the obverse legend recording his rank and priestly office (PONT), while the reverse legend VICT AETERN asserts the Severan regime’s claim to enduring victory and stability. The type belongs to the Eastern denarius series produced during the family’s extended engagement with the eastern provinces in the early third century, preceding Geta’s elevation to Augustus in 209 and his death in 211.
