Description
Geta (as Caesar), Denarius, AR, Rome, AD 198–209; 3.48 g, 18 mm. P SEPT GETA CAES PONT; bare-headed, draped bust right. PRINC IVVENTVTIS; Geta standing left in military dress, holding baton and scepter, two standards behind. Centered strike with complete legends, fabric typical of Severan Rome. RIC IV Geta 18.
The PRINC IVVENTVTIS reverse proclaims Geta’s status as prince of the youth, a traditional designation for an imperial heir and a public affirmation of Severan dynastic continuity alongside his brother Caracalla. Elevated to Caesar in AD 198 and later to Augustus in 209, Geta’s brief prominence ended with his assassination by Caracalla in 211; issues like this document his role and intended succession during the final years of Septimius Severus’s reign.
