Description
Septimius Severus, Denarius, AR; emperor AD 193–211; Emesa, c. AD 195; 2.81 g; 18.5 mm. Obverse: IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II; laureate head of Septimius Severus right. Reverse: TR P III IMP V COS II; Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm. Struck on Eastern fabric typical of the Emesa series; surfaces suspicious. RIC IV 435 (Emesa).
Struck during Severus’s third tribunician year and after his fifth acclamation as imperator, this Emesa issue belongs to the eastern wartime coinage produced while he secured Syria and defeated Pescennius Niger. The titulature COS II and TR P III fixes the date to AD 195, reflecting his early consolidation of power after the turmoil of AD 193. Emesa functioned as a principal eastern mint for Severus before production shifted westward, supplying denarii for army pay and disseminating imperial victory messages across the region.
