Description
Maximian, Antoninianus (radiate), AE; reign AD 286–305; struck at Antioch c. AD 286–293; 3.39 g, 22 mm. Obverse: IMP C M A MAXIMIANVS P F AVG; radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: CONCORDIA MILITVM; allegorical type honoring the concord of the army, as issued at Antioch. Struck on the late third-century radiate module typical of the eastern mint. RIC V 621.
Issued during the consolidation of the Tetrarchic regime, this radiate underscores Maximian’s reliance on army loyalty as expressed by the CONCORDIA MILITVM legend. Antioch served as a principal eastern mint supplying coin for frontier forces and administration prior to the 294 reform that introduced the large follis, making this piece part of the final phase of the antoninianus in the East.
