Description
PONTOS, Amisos (as Peiraieos). Circa 435-370 BC. AR Siglos (17.5mm, 5.80 g, 3h). Diog–, magistrate. Head of Hera left, wearing stephanos / Owl, with spread wings, standing facing on shield; grain ear to left, [sword-in-sheath to right], ΔI-OΓ across central fields. Malloy 1ax; HGC 7, 229.
Amisos (modern Samsun) was a principal mint of the Pontic Kingdom, active especially during the Mithradatic Wars (88–63 BC), and its silver types were widely copied in the region. Imitative drachms of Amisos circulated alongside official issues to meet regional demand during periods of military mobilization and disrupted supply. The Hera obverse and eagle reverse correspond to late Hellenistic civic and royal iconography in Pontos, illustrating the diffusion of Amisos types into local and unofficial productions across the Black Sea sphere.
