Description
Elagabalus, As, AE, AD 218–222, 14.63 g, 27 mm.
Rome mint. Obv. IMP CAES M AVR ANTONINVS PIVS AVG; laureate head right. Rev. VICTORIA ANTONINI AVG; Victory standing left, holding wreath and palm; S C in field. Struck at Rome under senatorial authority for the bronze denomination. RIC IV Elagabalus 376. Elagabalus (Marcus Aurelius Antoninus) came to power in AD 218 after the overthrow of Macrinus, promoted by his grandmother Julia Maesa. His bronze coinage at Rome with the legend VICTORIA ANTONINI AVG broadcasted regime victory and legitimacy tied to the Antonine name he adopted, while the S C on the reverse signaled the Senate’s formal authorization of imperial base-metal issues during his short reign (AD 218–222).
