Description

Domitian as Caesar, AE22, AE, struck under the Flavians at Antioch (Syria), c. AD 72–81, 7.45 g, 22 mm. Obv. DOMITIANVS CAESAR; head right. Rev. S C. Struck at Antioch ad Orontem on a provincial bronze flan, part of the Latin-inscribed S C series imitating imperial bronze reverses. RPC II 2024.

This type documents Domitian’s position as junior member of the Flavian dynasty before his accession in AD 81 and illustrates Antioch’s role as a major eastern mint producing bronze for local circulation. The Latin obverse legend and S C reverse show the adoption of metropolitan Roman monetary iconography in a provincial context, reflecting close administrative and ideological links between Rome and the capital of Roman Syria.
