Description

Antioch (semi-autonomous under Maximinus II Daia, AD 310–313), civic bronze, AE, c. AD 312; 1.39 g; 14 mm. Obverse legend GENIO ANTIOCHENI with the Genius of Antioch. Reverse legend APOLLONI SANCTO with Apollo. Struck at Antioch on a small module bronze flan with Latin civic legends and no imperial portrait. Reference: NC 1993, no. 3.

Issued during the late reign of Maximinus II Daia, this short-lived Antiochene civic bronze series reflects official support for traditional cults in the East on the eve of the Licinian-Constantinian settlement. The dedication APOLLONI SANCTO aligns with the prominent Apollo sanctuary at Daphne outside Antioch, while GENIO ANTIOCHENI invokes the city’s tutelary power. The series ceased after Maximinus II’s defeat in AD 313, marking the end of this distinct pagan-themed civic emission at Antioch.
