Description
Nero, Tetradrachm, AR, AD 54–68; Alexandria, regnal year 11 (AD 64/65); 12.13 g; 24 mm. Laureate head of Nero right; legend ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ. Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑ; L IA (year 11) in field. Struck at Alexandria on a broad flan with a centered impression and legible regnal date. RPC I 5283.
Struck for the provincial currency system of Roman Egypt, Alexandrian tetradrachms served as the region’s principal silver coinage and were dated by the emperor’s regnal year; L IA denotes Nero’s year 11 (AD 64/65). The Greek legends reflect the administrative language of the province, and the eagle on thunderbolt—emblem of Zeus/Jupiter—was a standard local reverse type under Nero, aligning Hellenistic iconography with Roman imperial authority.
