Description
Valens, AD 364–378. AV Solidus (22 mm, 4.46 g, 11 h). Antioch, AD 366. Obv. D N VALENS PER F AVG. Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Valens right. Rev. RESTITVTOR REI PVBLICAE. Valens standing facing, head right, in military attire, holding labarum surmounted by a cross in right hand and Victory on globe in left; in exergue, •ANTH•. Refs. Depeyrot 26/3; RIC IX Antioch 2(d).xxv.3. Struck two years into the reign of Valens, this handsome Antiochene solidus projects the image of a sober, soldier-emperor committed to restoring order after the succession of 364. The obverse portrays Valens with a firm, finely engraved profile beneath the pearl diadem, his cuirass and paludamentum crisply indicated—an archetype of late Roman imperial gravitas. The reverse legend, RESTITVTOR REI PVBLICAE (“Restorer of the Commonwealth”), was a favourite of the Constantinian and Valentinian houses, here paired with a powerful tableau of the emperor as Christian victor: the labarum bearing a cross unites the language of military command with the symbolism of the faith, while Victory on globe in the left hand proclaims universal dominion sanctioned by divine favour. The mintmark •ANTH• confirms the product of the Antioch mint—one of the empire’s great eastern workshops—whose late 4th-century dies are noted for clear lettering, tidy fabric, and a disciplined, linear style. Historically, the coin belongs to Valens’ consolidation phase in the East: administrative tightening in the provinces, renewed vigilance against Gothic and Persian pressure, and continued development of a Christian imperial idiom in art and coinage. The “Restitutor” theme thus reads less as a single victory and more as a pledge of stable governance—civil order, frontier security, and fiscal reliability—under the new dynasty. Gold solidi like this served as pay for senior officers and high officials, circulating as both sound bullion and portable propaganda across the eastern Mediterranean. Condition: Lustrous, fresh surfaces with sharply defined devices and clean legends; an attractive, well-centred strike from well-cut dies.
