Description
Kings of Paeonia. Patraos, circa 335–315 BC. AR Tetradrachm (23 mm, 12.79 g, 9 h). Astibos or Damastion mint.
Obv. Laureate head of Apollo right.
Rev. ΠΑΤΡΑΟΥ. Paeonian horseman in crested helmet and full armour galloping right, spearing a fallen enemy; in lower left field, boukranion (ox skull); all within linear border.
Refs. Paeonian Hoard 232 (same dies); Peykov E2190.
Struck in the age of Alexander, this vigorous type pairs the idealised head of Apollo—signalling Hellenic culture and prestige—with one of the most dynamic cavalry scenes of the late 4th century BC, celebrating the famed Paeonian horsemen who fought alongside Macedon. The boukranion control mark in the field aids die attribution within the series and likely denotes a specific emission from the same workshop responsible for other Patraos issues recorded in the Paeonian Hoard.
