Description
Marcus Antonius Gordianus, known as Gordian III, ruled as Roman Emperor from 238 to 244 AD, ascending the throne at just 13 years old during the turbulent "Year of the Six Emperors." Despite his youth, Gordian III led a successful campaign against the Persian Empire in 242 AD, reclaiming Mesopotamia. His reign ended abruptly in 244 AD, likely due to assassination orchestrated by his successor, Philip the Arab.
The reverse inscription "VIRTVS AVG" depicts the personification of Virtus, the Roman virtue of courage and military strength, holding a spear and shield—emphasizing Gordian’s valor and imperial legitimacy.
