Description
Nero, tetradrachm, AR, AD 54–68; Alexandria, Year 13 (AD 66/67). 14.05 g; 24 mm. Obverse: ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ ΑΥ; laureate head of Nero right; L ΙΓ (regnal year 13) in left field. Reverse: ΘΕΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ; radiate head of Divus Augustus right. Struck at Alexandria on the standard provincial tetradrachm module, with Greek legends and regnal dating in the obverse field. Reference: RPC I 5294.
Issued for Egypt’s closed monetary system, this Alexandrian tetradrachm pairs Nero’s portrait with the radiate head of Divus Augustus and the legend Theos Sebastos, reflecting the institutionalized imperial cult and the dynastic link to the founder of the principate. The regnal date L ΙΓ places the coin within the Alexandrian year spanning 29 August AD 66 to 28 August AD 67, at the outset of the First Jewish Revolt, illustrating the precise local dating conventions and political messaging of Roman provincial coinage.
