Description

Nero, Tetradrachm, AR, reign AD 54–68; Alexandria, Year 14 (AD 67/68). 10.91 g; 24 mm.

Laureate head of Nero right; legend ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ ΑΥ with regnal date L ΙΔ in field. Reverse with Actian Apollo standing; legend ΑΚΤΙΟΣ ΑΠΟΛΛΩΝ. Struck at Alexandria with Greek legends and explicit regnal dating, following the Egyptian provincial standard. RPC I 5317.

Issued in the closed monetary system of Roman Egypt, Alexandrian tetradrachms functioned as the principal silver-based local denomination and employed Greek legends with regnal-year dating (L + Greek numerals). The Actian Apollo type recalls Augustus’s victory at Actium in 31 BC and the imperial cultic associations that underpinned the principate, situating Nero within that Augustan ideological framework. Year 14 (AD 67/68) falls in the final phase of Nero’s reign, shortly before his death in June 68.
