Description
Pergamon (Mysia), AE16, bronze, Attalid Kingdom, circa 200s–100s BC; 3.50 g; 16 mm. Laureate, bearded head of Asklepios left; reverse with serpent-entwined staff, Γ (gamma) in right field as control mark. Struck at the Pergamon mint on a small-module bronze flan typical of the civic series of the Attalid period. BMC Mysia 169.
Pergamon was the Attalid capital and home to a major Asclepieion, making Asklepios and his serpent staff standard civic types that advertised the city’s role as a healing center. These bronzes served everyday transactions in the 3rd–2nd centuries BC, with Greek control letters such as Γ organizing emissions under local authorities, prior to Pergamon’s bequest to Rome in 133 BC.
