The Tyrian shekel, was renowned for its high and consistent silver content. It was widely used in trade and for payment of the annual half-shekel Temple tax in Jerusalem. Traditionally associated with the biblical Thirty Pieces of Silver, it remains one of the most historically significant silver coinages of the ancient Mediterranean.
