Septimius Severus — Denarius, PACI AETERNAE, Rome
Lot 3082 · Consigned by Numis-Lens
Description
Struck at Rome, AD 197–198, this denarius belongs to the middle years of Septimius Severus's reign (AD 193–211). The obverse legend L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP X reads Lucius Septimius Severus Pertinax Augustus, Imperator for the tenth time, and it is that acclamation count which fixes the issue to these two years.
PACI AETERNAE, "to Eternal Peace", frames Pax seated left, draped, holding an olive branch in her outstretched right hand and a sceptre in her left. The branch is the offer of peace, the sceptre the authority that guarantees it: a claim of settled order under the new Severan dynasty.
