Constantine I — Follis, Sol, Arles

Attributed to Arles and dated AD 313–315, this bronze follis shows Constantine I laureate, draped and cuirassed, facing right. The portrait and much of IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG remain visible.

SOLI INVICTO COMITI means “To the unconquered Sun, companion.” Sol stands left with his right hand raised and a globe in his left, his cloak falling from the shoulder. The figure is visible against the darker field; the mintmark is indistinct in the available photographs.
