Jovian - Centenionalis, VOT V MVLT X, Sirmium

Struck at Sirmium during Jovian’s brief reign of AD 363–364, this bronze centenionalis reflects a moment of emergency succession. Jovian was proclaimed emperor by the army after the death of Julian during the Persian campaign, inheriting a dangerous military and political situation.

The reverse legend, VOT V MVLT X, records imperial vows for five years, with hopes for ten. On Jovian’s coinage this is especially poignant: his reign lasted only about eight months, and he died in early AD 364 before reaching Constantinople. The wreath around the vows presents continuity, legitimacy, and hopes for stability after the shock of Julian’s death and the difficult peace with Persia.
