Description

Struck c. AD 255 at a mint not securely identified, this antoninianus names Saloninus as Caesar under the joint rule of Valerian and Gallienus: the portrait is his, the issuing authority theirs. His radiate, draped bust faces right inside the legend P COR SAL VALERIANVS CAES, which reads nearly in full; a patch of deposit sits across the face, and there is a small flaw at the flan edge below the bust.

The reverse legend DII NVTRITORES means "the gods, the nourishers." Jupiter, nude but for a cloak over his shoulders, stands left and presents a small Victory to Saloninus, who faces him in military dress. The type casts the Caesar as reared under the gods' protection, with victory handed to him by Jupiter himself. Both figures stand out clearly, the legend softer toward the top.
