Description

Struck at Alexandria between 351 and 355 AD, this bronze belongs to the sweeping FEL TEMP REPARATIO coinage of Constantius II, issued while he ruled as senior Augustus and campaigned to restore order across a divided empire. The "fallen horseman" type was the reform's most widespread reverse, minted in vast numbers from Britain to Egypt as a statement of renewed imperial security.

The reverse legend FEL TEMP REPARATIO — Felix Temporum Reparatio, "the restoration of happy times" — shows a helmeted Roman soldier advancing left, spearing a fallen horseman who twists back on his collapsing mount. The scene casts the emperor's armies as guarantors of a renewed golden age, trampling the enemies that had pressed on Rome's frontiers. In exergue, the mintmark ALEΓ marks the third officina of Alexandria.
