Valentinian I — Nummus, RESTITVTOR REIP, Cyzicus

Struck at Cyzicus in AD 364–367 in the name of Valentinian I. The obverse has his pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right; the profile and imperial name remain visible, with wear across the cheek and hair.

RESTITVTOR REIP abbreviates “restorer of the state.” The emperor stands facing, head right, holding a standard and Victory on a globe; his figure and the main outlines of the attributes survive on the brown surface.
