Athens — Tetradrachm, Athena & Owl

Athens — Tetradrachm, Athena & Owl

Lot 553 · Consigned by Numis-Lens

Starting bid $1.00

Description

Struck at Athens circa 353–294 BC, this silver tetradrachm belongs to the later series of Athenian owl coinage. Athena faces right in a crested Attic helmet decorated with olive leaves and a palmette; her profile and helmet ornament remain distinct, with several scratches across the cheek.

The reverse shows an owl standing right with its head facing, an olive sprig and crescent to the left, within an incuse square. The ethnic ΑΘΕ abbreviates “of the Athenians”; the owl’s eyes and feather pattern stand in relief, with the right-hand legend partly beyond the flan.
