Gordian III — Tetradrachm, Eagle & Ram, Antioch
Lot 3107 · Consigned by Numis-Lens
Description
A billon tetradrachm of Antioch, the great provincial coinage of Roman Syria, struck under Gordian III between AD 238 and 244. These heavy pieces paid soldiers and merchants across the east while the young emperor prepared his Persian campaign.
The Greek legend ΔHMAPX EΞ YΠATO B records Gordian's tribunician power and second consulship. An eagle stands facing with a wreath in its beak, and below it the ram of Antioch leaps left beneath a crescent.
