Vespasian — Denarius, COS ITER TR POT, Pax, Rome

Description

Struck at Rome, AD 70, the first full year of Vespasian's reign, after the civil wars of 69 had carried off three emperors in succession. The early Flavian denarii announce the new dynasty's programme in the plainest terms available.

The reverse reads COS ITER TR POT, "consul for the second time, holding tribunician power". Pax sits left, draped, extending a branch in her right hand and holding a winged caduceus in her left: peace and the commerce that follows it, the promise of a government that had ended the fighting.
