Septimius Severus — Denarius, VICTORIAE AVGG FEL, Rome
Lot 3076 · Consigned by Numis-Lens
Description
Rome mint, struck between AD 197 and 200. The obverse legend reads L SEPT SEV AVG IMP XI
PART MAX, recording Severus at his eleventh imperatorial acclamation with the title
Parthicus Maximus. He claimed that title in 198, the year his army sacked Ctesiphon.
The reverse legend VICTORIAE AVGG FEL expands to Victoriae Augustorum Felici, "to the
fortunate victory of the emperors". Two Gs, two Augusti: Severus and his son Caracalla,
elevated that same year. Victory flies left with a wreath in both hands above a shield set
on a low base.

Attributions are my own, made from the references listed. Ancient coins are not always
straightforward, and a reference can turn out to be wrong or open to argument, so please
study the photographs. They are part of the description, and if you read the coin
