Byzantine Empire, Leo VI the Wise (AD 886–912). AE Follis, Constantinople mint.
Lot 3504 · Consigned by Classiccoins.inc
Description
Obverse: + LEON BASILEVS ROM, crowned bust of Leo facing, wearing chlamys and holding akakia.
Reverse: Four-line Greek legend + LEON / EN ΘEO BA / SILEVS R / OMEON ("Leo, in God, emperor of the Romans").
A classic "inscription" follis of Leo VI, son of Basil I and codifier of Byzantine law (the Basilika). This example weighs 7.00g on a broad 27mm flan, with a pleasing even green patina and fully readable legends — much better in hand than the photos suggest, as is common for this type.
Sear 1729 is the bust-type (not the enthroned Sear 1728), the most collected Leo VI bronze. Published weights for the type cluster 6.3–7.7g at 25–27mm, matching this coin exactly.
