Description

Macedon, Thessalonica. Augustus, 27 BC–AD 14, with Divus Julius Caesar.

Æ 22 mm, 11.29 g.

Reference: RPC I 1554.

Dark green and earthen patina. The portrait of Augustus is clear and expressive, with much of the surrounding reverse legend visible. The portrait of Julius Caesar is softer but identifiable, with traces of the obverse legend remaining. Some surface roughness and deposits, as visible in the photographs.

A historically compelling provincial bronze pairing the deified Julius Caesar with his adopted heir Augustus, visually expressing the dynastic and ideological foundations of the new Roman imperial order.

Fine to Very Fine.
