As the last emperor of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, Commodus marked the transition from the high point of the Roman Empire's era of the Five Good Emperors to the subsequent period of political and social instability. His reign is noted for its increasing focus on autocracy and widespread perception of his rule as tyrannical, noteworthy for extravagant public displays and neglect of state affairs. Coins from his era often reflect his attempts at self-aggrandizement, embodying both his desire for divine association and his assertion of imperial authority.
