Description

Nero, Tetradrachm, Silver, struck in Antioch, 60/61 CE. Weight: 14.44g, Diameter: 25mm.

The obverse features the Greek legend ΝΕΡΩΝΟΣ ΚΑΙΣΑΡΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΥ, portraying a laureate head of Emperor Nero facing right. The reverse displays the Greek letters Ζ ΘΡ within a laurel wreath, signifying the regnal year of Nero's rule. The strike is well-centered with considerable detail preserved, characteristic for issues from Antioch. Reference: RPC I, 4181. Historically, this coin is significant as it reflects Nero's consolidation of power in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. The tetradrachm served as an integral part of the local economy, circulating extensively as both a symbol of Roman authority and a practical medium of exchange in the bustling commercial hub of Antioch. The use of Greek legends underscores the cultural blend within the provinces.
