Description
Augustus (27 BC – AD 14). AR Denarius. Lugdunum mint, struck ca. 2 BC – AD 4. Obverse: CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE, laureate head of Augustus right. Reverse: AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT around, C L CAESARES in exergue; Gaius and Lucius Caesar standing facing, each togate and resting a hand on a shield, spears behind; above, simpulum and lituus. RIC I² 207; BMC 533; RSC 43. Pleasantly toned, moderate wear, clear legends, and attractive surfaces.
This celebrated type honors Augustus’ grandsons Gaius and Lucius Caesar, whom he adopted as heirs apparent and designated as “Princes of Youth” (Principes Iuventutis). Their youthful figures symbolize the dynastic continuity that Augustus carefully attempted to establish following decades of civil strife. Tragically, the premature deaths of Gaius and Lucius (AD 4 and 2, respectively) shattered Augustus’ hopes and ultimately led to the succession of Tiberius, fundamentally altering the trajectory of Roman history. Consequently, coins of this issue represent a poignant window into Augustus’ dynastic ambitions and the fragility of imperial succession in the early empire.
