Description
France, TRIBUTE TO ÉTIENNE-JULES MAREY, 1977 Restrike Medal, UNC, Bronze plaquette, 50 x 64mm metal by Paul Richer. EM: Bronze, cornucopia, 1977. Profile of E. J. Marey to right, facing left. In background, to left, a shed-like structure with a tower above, most probably used to photograph flying birds. At top, in background center and left, these words: E. J. MAREY/ MEMBRE DE L’INSTITUT/ PROFESSEUR/ AU COLLÉGE DE FRANCE. In the exergue, this Latin epigram: VIVUNT ARTE TUA SCRIPTI VESTIGIA MOTUS. (J. D. translation: THE TRACES OF GRAPHICALLY RECORDED MOTION LIVE BY YOUR ART. J. D. notes that “scripti” would be directly translated as “scribed,” but felt that this was too limiting in a description of Marey’s work.)/Marey in his laboratory, seated at a table, left. On the table are various recording devices including a revolving drum for recording marks made by a diaphragmatic pen, wet cells, cameras and other objects. Marey is looking down at a chart and holds a pair of dividers in his right hand while he holds his head in his left hand. Above the desk a band of clouds separates the real from the envisioned which includes several running nude male figures, galloping horses and birds. Small ding on the obverse by the lapel. From the T.H.G Collection.
