Description

Greek Tanagra Terracotta Head of a Young Bacchus, ca. 4th-3rd Century BC. Dionysos, the god of wine, is depicted wearing an ivy wreath adorned with leaves and berries. The portrayal of the god as a youthful, beardless figure derives from Hellenistic Greek art, when his iconography underwent a significant transformation. In earlier Greek art, Dionysos was generally represented as a mature, bearded man, whereas in Hellenistic and Roman art he was increasingly portrayed as a youthful, beardless god.
