Description

Reverse: COS III — Minerva standing right, holding spear and resting hand on shield.

Material: Silver (AR) | Weight: 3.10 g | Diameter: 20 mm | Reference: RIC II 234; RSC 295

Description:

An elegant silver denarius of Emperor Hadrian, struck in the final years of his reign. The reverse honors Minerva, Roman goddess of wisdom, strategy, and the arts — a fitting counterpart to Hadrian’s reputation as both philosopher and statesman. The image of Minerva poised with spear and shield reflects Rome’s disciplined intellect and imperial vigilance, themes central to Hadrian’s cultivated self-image as a philosophical ruler.

The portrait exhibits fine classical modeling with a naturalistic expression and subtle depth, while the reverse composition retains sharp detail despite gentle wear.

Condition:

Very Fine, lightly toned with smooth steel-grey surfaces. Minor edge crack as struck, yet the metal remains sound. Centered and well-balanced strike with full legends visible.

Remarks:

Denarii featuring Minerva are among the most refined of Hadrian’s later issues, encapsulating the emperor’s admiration for Greek intellect and Roman virtue.
