Description

Struck in 256–257 AD, during the joint reign of Valerian and his son Gallienus, at an uncertain mint in Asia. The obverse names Gallienus, IMP GALLIENVS AVG, his radiate, cuirassed bust crisp in the crown and drapery, the legend softer along the top of the flan.

The reverse reads VICTORIA GERMAN(ICA), "victory over the Germanic peoples": Victory, carrying a palm, crowns Gallienus with a wreath as he stands in military dress holding globe and sceptre, a star in the field between them. Both figures and the star stand out sharply.
