Description
Egyptian Faience Aker Amulet, Late Period, ca. 715-330 BC. A molded amulet depicting the double lion deity Aker, represented by two recumbent lions conjoined back-to-back on an integral rectangular base. Each lion rendered with stylized facial features, incised mane detailing, and forepaws extended forward. A suspension loop rises from the center.
Aker represented the eastern and western horizons and symbolized the liminal passage between yesterday and tomorrow. Double lion amulets such as this were worn for apotropaic protection and regeneration, particularly in funerary contexts.
