Parthian Silver Bowl with Tendril Frieze

Description

Parthian Silver Bowl with Tendril Frieze, Hellenistic, ca. 2nd-1st Century BC. Gilt floral tendrils in a circular band, bordered by a wave design, decorate the bowl’s interior.

The tendrils show a clear Hellenistic influence that remained after the collapse of Seleucid control in this area. An inscription in Aramaic around the outer rim (partially obscured by corrosion) would have identified the owner or silversmith and weight of the vessel. D. 9" (22.9 cm)..
