***The Famous "Miracle of the Rain" (173–174 AD)
The most notable event attributed to this timeframe is the "Rain Miracle". While fighting the Quadi tribe (in modern-day Slovakia or Austria), a Roman legion—likely the Legio XII Fulminata—was surrounded, cut off from water, and facing annihilation in the brutal summer heat.
• The Event: As the Romans faced certain surrender, a sudden, violent storm erupted. It brought torrential rain to quench the Roman soldiers' thirst while simultaneously pelting the enemy with hail and lightning.
• The Aftermath: The Romans turned the disaster into a major victory. This event was so significant that it was permanently carved onto the massive Column of Marcus Aurelius in Rome, depicting a giant, winged rain god slaking the thirst of the soldiers.
• The Controversy: Different groups immediately claimed credit for the miracle. Roman pagans claimed Marcus Aurelius's personal piety or an Egyptian magician summoned the gods; early Christians claimed it was the result of prayers from Christian soldiers in the legion***
