Description

Nero; 54-68 AD, Lugdunum, 64 AD, Dupondius, 12.82g. Cf. Paris-87 and MacDowall-496 and 503. Obv: NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG [GER P M TR P IMP] P (or [IMP P] P) Head laureate l., with globe at tip of neck. Rx: VICTORIA - AVGVSTI S - C Victory flying l., r. leg forward and clear of drapery, holding wreath and palm, mark of value II in exergue. Victory with advanced bare right leg is the Rome-mint variant of this dupondius type, rarely used at Lugdunum, where it was apparently quickly replaced by the Lugdunese variant, which showed Victory's clothed left leg advanced rather than her bare right leg. Our coin, combining this Rome-mint reverse variant with a laureate, left-facing portrait of Nero on the obverse, may be an unpublished variety.
