Hadrian. Denarius

Hadrian; 117-138 AD, Rome, c. 132 AD, Denarius, 3.28g. C-156 (5 Fr.), RIC-1503. Obv: Bust laureate and draped r. Rx: ALEXANDRIA Alexandria standing l. holding sistrum and snake in basket. Very scarce with laureate and draped bust. Purchased from CNG 16 November, 1993. Formerly in the Dr. A Voirol Collection; not in the prestigious 1968 auction of Dr. Voirol's collection, Münzen und Medaillen 38, but the present lot includes Voirol's ticket. "Ex Voirol" coins appear from time to time, but this is the first Voirol ticket known to us. In all likelihood, M & M discarded the collector's tickets when preparing the auction, and tickets survive only for pieces like the present lot sold outside the auction framework. 13 April 1936 is noted on the back of Voirol's ticket, presumably the date the collector obtained this coin..
