Description
Struck at Miletos around 325 to 323 BC, so either in Alexander's lifetime or within months of his death at Babylon.
Herakles wears the lion skin on the obverse, a type the Macedonian kings had used before him. How much of Alexander's own face is in it has been argued over for a long time and is not settled. The reverse reads AΛEΞANΔPOY, "of Alexander," with Zeus enthroned left holding an eagle and a sceptre. The monogram in the left field is what ties the coin to Miletos in Price's arrangement.
