Homer's The Odyssey 6 Greek Coin Wooden Box Set

The story takes place around 1200 BC

Homer’s The Odyssey follows Greek hero Odysseus, King of Ithaca, on a grueling ten-year journey home after the Trojan War. Presumed dead, his palace is overrun by aggressive suitors demanding the hand of his loyal wife, Penelope, and consuming his estate. Concurrently, his son Telemachus searches for news of his father.

Meanwhile, Odysseus is stranded by the nymph Calypso until Zeus orders her to release him. His voyage is cursed by Poseidon for blinding the Cyclops Polyphemus. Odysseus encounters many perils, including the Lotus Eaters, the witch Circe, the treacherous Sirens, and the monsters Scylla and Charybdis, which kill his entire crew.

With help from the Phaeacians, Odysseus finally reaches Ithaca alone. Disguised as a beggar by the goddess Athena, he infiltrates his palace. Penelope announces an archery contest using Odysseus's old bow, which only he can string. He wins, reveals his identity, and slaughters the suitors with Telemachus, reclaiming his throne and family.

The poet Homer lived and composed the epic centuries later, during the Archaic period around the 8th or 7th century BC
