Egyptian Predynastic Votive Piriform Black Breccia Macehead

Egyptian Predynastic Votive Piriform Black Breccia Macehead, Naqada II to Early Dynastic Period, ca. 3500-2900 BC. The selection of the highly contrasting black-and-white breccia, combined with the rigorous mechanical execution of the tapered bore on such a diminutive scale, reflects the pinnacle of early Nile Valley stone-working technology. As a grave good, this piece transitioned the mace from a brutal weapon of combat into a refined, lasting symbol of authority and the afterlife. 43mm × 36mm; weight 78.16g..
